FNR-550-WTrees can grow in ways that are not always the safest or most sustainable for long-term health and safety. This can happen for many reasons: species characteristics, growing location, or lack of proper pruning in early life stages. Cabling, bracing, guying, or props may help prevent branch or whole-tree failure. These tree support systems reinforce critical areas of the tree by limiting the movement of branches or leaders. This publication describes common structural deficiencies in trees and the tree support devices used to prevent problems caused by those deficiencies.
