PPP-13SLRC-WPesticides are important tools for controlling organisms that limit crop and livestock production, damage property (including sewer line root control products), spread disease, or otherwise detract from our quality of life. However, as with any tool, their misuse can pose a threat to human health and environmental quality. Pesticide applicator certification is a means of ensuring that individuals who apply pesticides professionally have the knowledge to do so in a safe, judicious, and effective manner.
Certification to become a commercial pesticide applicator is generally a two-step process. Individuals, at least 18 years old, must pass the Core exam and a Category exam in their field of professional interest.
Closed-book, computer-based examinations, developed and managed by OISC, are available at numerous locations around the state. After passing the Core exam and at least one Category exam a person achieves commercial certification. No exam may be attempted more than three times in a 12-month period.
There is an exception to the two-step certification process for certain commercial applicators. Limited certification (e.g., Category 13, Sewer Line Root Control) is available for persons involved in professional pest management where pesticide use is very limited in scope (as determined by OISC). Persons certifying in Category 13 take a combination Core and category exam only.
